Would the Real Replacement Please Stand Up?

Oh, sorry…wrong game show. (Remember which one? The answer’s at the bottom of this post.)

The Hollywood Reporter claims that the list of candidates to take over hosting duties on The Price is Right after Bob Barker’s retirement has now been cut to just three.

The first is my pick, the one I’ve always expected to officially get the job: Todd Newton, who has been hosting the live stage version of the show in Vegas. Newton has also hosted Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck and Hollywood Showdown on GSN.

And like Barker, Newton has a cause. For years, Barker has urged viewers to have their pets spayed or neutered to help control pet overpopulation. Newton has completed a training program led by former Vice President Al Gore to prepare him to help get the message out about global warming.

Newton also tells audiences at the live stage version of the popular game show that he spent hours with Barker going over the games to be able to host the casino-based version. Maybe that might be enough to give him something of an edge.

The second name on the list is co-host of a show that used to be watchable, but hasn’t been in many, many years: Entertainment Tonight. Mark Steines, say some sources, could be the next host giving away cash and prizes.

Like Newton, Steines looks good on camera, but Steines is a little too good at the tabloid crap that ET (as it likes to call itself several dozen times per episode) thrives on. Granted, it’s unlikely that Steines, who joined the Entertainment Tonight cast in 1995, would find much sleaze to work with among the new cars and shiny kitchen appliances on the ‘Price’ set.

And his show is a ratings powerhouse for local stations, so anyone who’s into that kind of show certainly knows who he is.

The third name is the strangest choice on the list, so weird that it seems as if his name could have only come up during some drunken nightmare. Actor George Hamilton, who has enough melatonin built up that he could probably live underground for a decade and still look like he just came in from the beach.

I suppose that Hamilton’s name popped up on the list because of his 2006 appearance on Dancing With the Stars. Or maybe it was his appearance as an old West sheriff in a cracker commercial: he does know “toasted.”

I am told by someone who attended Hamilton’s audition taping that the actor seemed to have a good time with the audition, seemed at ease and had a good rapport with the audience.

Still, Hamilton turns 68 this year. Barker is 83. Do you really want to replace a man who is retiring after 50+ years in the business with someone who’ll soon be three years past the traditional retirement age?

My vote is still for Newton. Time will tell.

By the way, the reference at the start of this post, “Would the real _______ please stand up,” comes from another classic game show: To Tell the Truth.
