Not That Kind of Comment

Tag: Blogger, Internet, SpamPatrick @ 2:08 pm

Most bloggers will tell you that it’s always nice to get comments.  Well, that’s true, unless the comments are spam, pointing to porn sites or credit card scams or other dubious stops along the Information Super-highway.

I logged on while at lunch today and saw that I had 4 comments waiting for moderator approval.  Wouldn’t you know it:  all four were spam.

They love me, they really love me.   The feeling is not mutual, so I’ve activated an additional spam filter that Wordpress offers.  We’ll see how it works.

In the meantime, if you don’t have a porn site and aren’t trying to lure people into some fraudulent scam, feel free to say hello.

We get some doozies at Home Ec 101. Some are revolting and it’s only text. We took down our forums due to SPAM.

  2. Paul says:

Oh, look! Two comments…and one of them is spam.

  3. Patrick says:

I don’t think any of the three are spam.

All three make reference to the point of the post, after all.

Sort of depends on one’s definition of spam, doesn’t it? I consider unsolicited, commercial messages, irregardless of what is being sold, to be spam. I guess, in your definition, if what the commenter is selling is something faith-based or related to religion, then it isn’t spam in your book.

The fact that it related to religion, Wil, had nothing to do with my original choice to allow the post to come through. I find that to be a rather insulting idea, frankly.

Consider me fooled — I personally approved that comment, not Akismet — by the fact that it initially acknowledged the post itself, which is something most spambots are not able to do. I took it as a reasonable diversion because I’ve been posting a good deal about politics lately.

In any case, I checked the website address that was mentioned, and find that it is invalid. So I’ve changed my mind and removed the comment. Perhaps I’ll add a few things to my typical inner spam-test.

    Hi, Patrick!

No clue what the majority of this chain of comments is about, but I hate spam regardless of its provenance and final location. So I’m just saying hello. :D
