A Big Birthday
Today is my dad’s birthday. It’s a big one…one of those “milestone” birthdays people talk about. Today, he turns 65.
Sixty-five, though, doesn’t seem as big a deal as it used to. There was a time when 65 meant becoming “elderly,” but then that particular word became politically-incorrect.
Technically, turning 65 is regarded as the point at which you’re referred to as a “senior citizen.” But nowadays, one can join the ranks of AARP at 55, and retirement age varies from 62 up to 70. (With today’s economy, there are plenty of us who expect to be working when we’re 90!) And there are more and more people reaching that status each year; by 2020, 17 of the U.S. population is expected to be 65+.
He likes to call himself an “old character.” And whether old or not, depending on your own definition, there’s no question that he’s quite a character.
Happy Birthday, Dad.
