There’s something sad about losing the last of something. Today, news broke that the last survivor of the Titanic, Millvina Dean, died at 97 years old. It’s somehow comforting to know that someone who managed to make it through something that must have been unimaginably horrific could then go on to live almost a full century.
When Titanic struck an iceburg in April of 1912, Dean was just two months old; so she certainly couldn’t have had any memories of what it was like on that ship or in …

This morning in church, our pastor played a video made by OneTimeBlind, about Christians actually giving Christ control in our lives rather than trying to do things outside of God’s will.
It’s a lot easier said than done, and it’d be nice sometimes if God would just take that control from us to keep us out of trouble. But God doesn’t work that way, and the group uses a wooden stool to illustrate the point in this video, which you can see after the jump:
ABC, Reality Shows, Television »
ABC is planning a new reality show this summer called Crash Course.
Let’s hope no student-aged drivers are watching so that they don’t get any wild ideas with which to terrorize the rest of us.
The premise of this show, which is in the same vein as I Survived a Japanese Game Show, contestants must team up to compete in stunts behind the wheel. Just what the local highway patrol was hoping for, right? An example of a stunt might be that one contestant has control of the steering and acceleration while …
Sunday Seven »
Here’s a list of 8 Toxic Personalities you should avoid when you can. A list like this lends itself to two immediate Sunday Seven questions: listing the seven of them most often found within you, or listing the seven you tend to most often find around you.
I chose the least painful option.
First to play last week:
(According to the rules, “First to Play” requires you to be the first to include the link to the specific entry in which you answered the questions, not just the general link to …

Air travelers who go through Houston now have reason to take a deep sigh of relief when they have to relieve themselves: rumors of a not-so-secret video monitoring system inside urinals turned out to be a prank. It began when someone put official-looking stickers on urinals warning users that automatic flush sensors “also provide video monitoring for security purposes.” A follow-up call to an airport spokesperson finally cleared up the pee-time panic.
Cable, Digital Television, Government, Television »
The transition to DTV is just two weeks away. And apparently, the government means it this time. Another 200,000 households are now DTV-ready, meaning they have either purchased a DTV-tuner-equiped television, a DTV converter box, or cable or satellite service.
This leaves leaves 3.1 Million households, roughly 2.7% of U.S. households, still completely unready for digital broadcasts. And I suspect that in just over two weeks from now, we’ll be hearing from those people. Big time.

If this blog had an orchestra, I would ask for a little traveling music. Since it doesn’t, I will just tell you that transportation is the theme of this week’s set of questions!
First to play last week: Caryl of Mingle Freely. Congratulations!
(According to the rules, “First to Play” requires you to be the first to include the link to the specific entry in which you answered the questions, not just the general URL to your blog.)
Here are this week’s “Saturday Six” questions. Either answer the questions in a comment …
Anxiety & Depression »
There are a lot of bitter people in the world, folks with chips on their shoulder bigger than their cars, convinced that life itself has wronged them in a such a big way that all they can seem to accomplish is complain about how much they’ve been wronged.
Those people are about to have one more thing to be bitter about: a new mental illness named in their condition’s honor! Post-traumatic embitterment disorder (PTED) is the proposed name for the illness in which extreme bitterness keeps a person from functioning normally.
The …

What’s the number one thing airport passengers want? Wi-Fi.
A recent survey among business travelers shows that more than 47% called Wi-Fi most important airport amenity, outscoring basic needs like food by nearly 30 percentage points, Yahoo reports.
Even though I’m not a business traveler, I agree completely.
This isn’t much of a surprise to those who’ve actually tasted typical airport fare, even when that food is prepared under signs of big-name brands with real restaurants outside of airports. It also shouldn’t be much of a surprise to people who’ve faced …

The other day, a few of us “older” folks in the newsroom, those who’ve been in the business for, say, 15 years or more, felt a tremor of shock when it was learned that some of our younger co-workers have never seen the movie Gone With the Wind.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the end of the world. But at the same time, it’s one of the most well-known movies of all time, and we’re in the South, and these are people working in the media industry. …
Authors, Blogging, Fiction, Writing & Publishing »
A long time ago, I wrote about Stephen King’s book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. I enjoyed the book and it was not only an interesting look at King’s own backstory but also a good read about why writers should be writing and how King himself creates his horrific tales.
Over at How To Make My Blog, there’s a post about how what’s in King’s book should also apply to bloggers.
This one, when put to blogging, jumps out at me just as it did when I was reading …

Okay, so I’ll take the “Super” part, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.
You Are Super Spiritual
You are in touch with the world around you, and you find peace in connecting with others.
You believe that every life is special and that every life has a purpose.
You value harmony and understanding. You try not to judge, bicker, and fight.
As simple as it sounds, you truly think it’s important to make the world a better place.
How Spiritual Are You?

Welcome to Patrick’s Place, home of the Saturday Six and the Sunday Seven.
