A Clarification on Sanford’s Records
It’s worth mentioning clarifying earlier remarks about Mark Sanford’s voluntary release of his personal travel records.
On Wednesday, during an interview with the Associated Press, he admitted to more visits with the other woman than he had previously acknowledged, but assured the reporter that he had not spent any public money on a trip to meet her. He then agreed to provide the AP with his personal travel records.
Upon learning that there had been additional visits, the state’s attorney general asked state police to look into Sanford’s travel records for any sign of wrongdoing. Sanford’s office issued a statement saying he would not be releasing his records.
At some point along the way, when people began complaining about this flip-flop, a subsequent statement was issued, explaining that he was not going to release his records to the media, but that he had already released them to state police and was, in fact, cooperating fully with their investigation.
On Thursday, state police revealed that they found no record of any wrongdoing with regard to the use of public money for personal reasons.
Then, late Thursday afternoon, Sanford changed his mind again, and released his travel records to the media.
It was a confusing situation, even to those who work in news, so I wanted to make sure it was as clear as possible here.
