Linked Out

There are only so many “social networking” sites I’m willing to devote much time to.

I’m on Facebook, which I generally try to use for people I really know or interact with.  I’m on Twitter, which you already know if you’ve ever looked at my sidebar.

A while back, I was on Myspace.  That site felt a little too out of control for me.  One “friend” in particular was attempting to cause a great deal of drama and I have no time for that kind of foolishness.

Years ago, I gave Friendster a try.  There was almost no one I actually knew on that site, so I never really saw the point.

I’ve never tried FriendFeed, which I understand to be a combination of Facebook, Twitter and Myspace when it comes to publishing a stream of status messages.  If that’s all it is, I’d rather keep things the way they are.

Lately, I’ve gotten emails from LinkedIn, a “professional networking” site.  Just yesterday I received an email from someone who wanted to “reconnect” with me.  I’ve never seen the name in my life, so it was clear that I was never connected to begin with.  And when it comes to professional networking, I can generally take care of that myself.  So while LinkedIn can send me emails telling me that people I’ve never heard of want to get back in touch, I can just as easily delete the messages and stay on my current course.

They don’t know stubborn like I do.

Are there any sites you can’t get enough of?  Or are there any that you have no desire to be part of?  Hey, the comment section is below…you know what to do!

I enjoy Facebook. I can’t get on Myspace because I forgot my password and although I’ve tried to retrieve it, they never send me the email required to reset it. No biggie; I like Facebook better anyhow. It is a huge time-waster, though. What with Yoville and Farmville and all.

I refuse to Twitter. I routinely get messages that “So and So is now following” me on Twitter, which I find amusing. But FB is enough. I too use it for people I actually know and it has been an amazing tool for getting back in touch with people I never thought I would ever come across again. I was on myspace for a while and I suppose still technically am, but I rarely go there anymore. I resisted FB for the longest time but am so glad I caved. But I draw the line at Twitter. If I go down that road I will Never. Leave. The. Computer.

    Ever.

I have a MySpace account but I don’t use it. The whole MySpace interface is so awful…and those bright rainbow-coloured profiles with the embedded, auto-starting loud music samples…ugh. No thanks.

I signed up on Twitter because I kept hearing so much about it, and because I used to love text messaging and our new phone plan has unlimited messaging, so I was in the mood to do as much as possible with it. But I have not really made much use of it. I can’t really figure out what I am supposed to do there. Aside from posting funny one-liners or telling people what I am eating for breakfast, I just don’t see the point anymore. It was fun at first… Maybe if more people I actually knew used it, it might be different. My list of people I follow consists primarily of people I don’t actually know.

OK,, Mr. Stubborn :-) – I twitter, I FB, and I’m minimal on LinkedIN. The last one is a niche – get your resume on it, update your stuff from time to time, and it’s out there for professional look-ups in your particular skillset or whatever. I’m not big on anything else – Brightkite.com is the only other one, I think, and I only use it because I have the screenname “Rick” and I’m not giving that up.

The screenname thing I can totally understand!
