Cop Show Goes South

Cop Show Goes South

It was one of the best-received TV series by critics, and now NBC has decided to cancel it before its second season even begins.  The cop drama Southland is off the network’s schedule, and execs claim it’s because there’s not a market for dark shows at the moment.  Of course, NBC has limited slots to run the program, since Jay Leno’s on at 10 five nights per week.  I just don’t agree that “dark shows” are necessarily dead: lots of the bigger hits on TV have dark themes.

The New York Times had an article just today on how Jay Leno’s show is negatively impacting the network. “Southland” was one of the examples cited, that the show needed to be in the 10 p.m. slot to work.

I’m sorry to say that I’ve never seen the show. I’ll have to go to Hulu.com and check out a couple of episodes. Ironic since people using the Internet and DVRs is one of the reasons NBC says the 10 p.m. drama show is no longer viable.

Maybe the DVDs sell better when you can market them as “The Complete Series” instead of “The First Season.”

Personally, I’ve never seen an episode of Southland, but it hardly surprises me that they would be cutting the legs off a promising, critically-acclaimed show. Firefly being one example.

Supposedly there were as many as six episodes of the intended second season. I bet there’ll be a DVD set marketed as “The ‘Lost’ Episodes!”
