You certainly don’t need me to point out that there are a lot of angry Republicans today, the day after the comprehensive health care reform package was passed by the House.
And these Republicans have every right to be angry. But they ought to be angry with themselves more than anyone else. After all, they had several years of majority …

Thirty Years Later, Green Gets His Award

Submitted by Patrick on November 15, 2009 – 3:30 pm | No Comment

It was 1979. A commercial premiered featuring a limping football player forced to leave the game early, and a little boy who regarded him as a hero sneaking behind him to offer him a Coke.

After drinking the Coke, the tough-guy football player offers his jersey to the boy.  Thanks to the magic of YouTube, you can see the spot again after the jump.

TV Guide called it one of the best commercials of all-time, and even thirty years later, viewers still aren’t able to forget that Coca Cola spot.

For his role in that unforgettable ad, College Hall of Famer and former Pittsburg Steeler “Mean Joe” Green received a Clio Award, which is the advertising industry equivalent of the Emmy. But at the time, he wasn’t able to accept it, and, for reasons that make no sense, thirty years somehow wasn’t enough time for someone to get the trophy to him.

So the Coca-Cola company decided to pick up Green’s Clio, and they’ll present it to him at a special pre-game ceremony at Heinz Field. And as part of the special occasion, Green will be reunited with “the kid,” Tommy Okon.

It’s about time.
