Demands for Proof

I hear it all the time: people, particularly non-believers, who challenge a believer to “prove that their God exists.”
The challenge comes, usually, because the challengers already know what’s going to happen: the believer, invariably, won’t satisfactorily prove the existence of God, no matter what they come up with.  Which is, of course, the main reason the challenge is …

Country Singer: Good Deeds Right Out of Surgery?

Country singer Darryl Worley posted an update to his blog about the outcome of surgery to relieve worried fans.

Worley just went through a discectomy and cervical fusion, so perhaps the grammar policeman in my brain ought to just chalk it up to a big load of painkillers.   But his message contains an extremely common error that drives me nuts:

“Just wanted to let everybody know that I’m doing good after the surgery.”

If we truly take him at his word, what he’s actually saying is that he’s performing kind acts right out of the O.R.  When describing one’s health, well, which is usually an adverb, becomes an adjective.  It’s actually more complicated than that, but I’m here to correct grammar, not confuse with the intricate workings of our language.

So what he should have said is that he just wanted his fans to know he was doing well.

Unless, of course, he feels so much better that he actually is performing acts of kindness right there in the recovery room.  If that’s the case, he must really be a swell guy.
