Saturday Six – Episode 307

Recently, I wrote about a poll undertaken by a toilet paper company to determine whether people prefer their “t.p.” loaded with paper going over the roll or under. We have those minor annoyances, even if that particular one doesn’t bother you.

Those common annoyances are the subject of this week’s set of questions.

Here are this week’s “Saturday Six” questions. Either answer the questions in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your journal…but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! Permission is not granted to copy the questions to message boards for the purpose of having members answer and play along there. Enjoy!

1. Someone posts a question on a website’s message board asking a simple question that could easily be answered with a Google search: does that bother you? Do you tell them to look it up, or would you just provide the answer?

2. A co-worker in the cubicle next to you clips his fingernails regularly. Would this annoy you enough to make you complain?

3. You’re in line at a checkout counter when the person being waited on is delaying things because they won’t stop talking on her cell phone. Would this bother you? Would you say something about it?

4. At work, you go to the coffee area and see that the person before you has left a minor spill of coffee and sweetener. Would it bother you enough that you’d clean it up, or just leave it for someone else?

5. A co-worker’s cell phone keeps ringing every few minutes while they’re away from their desk. The ringtone is particularly annoying. If you knew they wouldn’t be back for an hour or more, would you be annoyed enough to turn the cell phone off?

6. Someone you know regularly returns a, “Hello, how are you?” with a simple, “Fine” and no effort to ask how you are. Would this bother you enough to make you stop asking them if you knew they’d never return the courtesy?

    You didn’t really hit any of my hot-button things.

    Is it really that awful to listen to or watch someone clipping a nail? Seriously, I feel as if I’m creating a huge faux pas when I do this. {sigh}

    1. Well I’d probably be polite & say you can find this information for future reference on the website providing the URL and remind to bookmark and give the answer. I try to do this with my students to get them to keep looking at their syllabus first since most answers can be found on it. This is also why I have it on my website since most lose their paper copy or do not have it on them, though they can access the internet quicker.

    2. Hmmm…I’d probably try a few things. Maybe play my music a bit louder then so I don’t have to listen. If in cubicle I probably can’t see right? Maybe earplugs if can’t turn up. Might go for my coffee break then, maybe ask the boss to come by for something so he can see! :-) Lots of options.

    3. I suppose this depends on what they are talking about. Usually you can hear/figure out. If emergency, someone ill etc no. If their latest gossip I probably would start answering. I have been known to do that. When people are loud and asking questions near me I answer! HA! My not so subtle hint but I don’t do it nastily. I have fun with it. When teenagers scream to each other I answer also. Hey you include me in public then alls fair! HA! I will though voice my opinion though if warranted. I had be a bit “matter of fact” with an off duty officer once. He turned to me & said, “Don’t you think so…” about the person before him & I said NO! I think you…. He was shocked and then said he was an officer & so I did still say, then you of all people should no better not to escalate a situation. You are a PEACE officer supposedly. He actually apologized. I said thank you & said everyone has bad days or
    moments so no problem.

    4. I’m not sure I would clean it up because it bothered me so much as it is the right thing to do. I know I would not leave it because I’d be as bad as the person who left it then in my opinion. I’d just figure I’d help out. Takes a village etc.

    5. Hmmm perhaps I could call the extension where they are at and ask them if I could silence it? Can I place it in a drawer? Again, maybe call the boss over & then he/she might do something…Hee hee.

    6. NOPE! I do what I think is right and others actions do not influence whether I do the right thing. Then again…this is a sorta superficial thing. I mean people say fine when they really aren’t so what is the big deal if they don’t. Maybe they have other things on their mind, sick family member, in pain themselves. I know I have lapse not asking because my mind is on something else so I give them the benefit of the doubt. I can’t say I always do. Sometimes I’m deep in thought…no me! Ha!
