Students Protest Gay Prom Date Decision

A small group of high school students protested their school’s decision to allow a gay teen to bring his boyfriend to the school’s prom…but for an odd reason.

Last week, the senior was given permission to take a same-sex date to the prom, marking the first time such an action has been allowed to happen. So the obvious motivation these students have for protesting is that they dislike this kid and disapprove of him being gay.

But in this case, that doesn’t seem to be the issue.

Most of the dozen or so who attended the protest, according to Macon’s The Telegraph, say they already knew the guy was gay, and that they have no problem with him bringing a same sex date to the prom.

The trouble is, they don’t want the rest of the nation thinking that they have no problem with it. They feel that the school’s decision has brought too much attention to their community:

“People who don’t know the area will think it reflects on everybody.”

That comment came from a grandfather who showed up after inquiring about the possibility of the school holding a separate prom for people who didn’t want to attend the main one.

But really? The fact that the school system actually had to hold a meeting to decide whether a male student could even be allowed to show up with another male as his date ought to make it obvious about the community as a whole. If the entire community was as “gay-friendly”&nbsp as they apparently fear others will assume them to be, no such dramatic consideration would have had to take place.

It seems a little dishonest to protest the attention over the decision but not the decision itself. If the students don’t mind the fact that he’s gay, then why are they concerned about other people thinking that they don’t? And if the don’t want to be associated with any tolerance towards homosexuality, then it seems wrong to then say that they don’t have a problem with it.

It sounds like a pretty blatant attempt to eat your cake and have it, too.
