UPDATED: Comment Bug Fixed…Again

If you have had trouble leaving a comment in the past few weeks, I really want to apologize.

There was apparently a bug last week that prevented some people from being able to leave a comment unless they made five or six attempts. I thought I had the problem fixed, but it crept back up again on Saturday.

Therefore, a plugin that I liked a lot, am-captcha, is now gone for good. That was the little number that allowed people to just check a box to show that they’re human, something a spambot is apparently unable to activate, and the comment was supposed to immediately go into moderation.

For some reason, twice now, that little plugin was refusing to acknowledge that the box had been checked, and in some cases, it even returned an error claiming the commenter was posting too many comments too quickly.

At this blog, I value all of the comments — at least, the legitimate ones. Missing one comment from a human reader is unacceptable to me.

Losing that plugin does mean that I now have a good bit of spam in my trash folder. In fact, yesterday, I went from zero to about eighty comments sent to the trash file. I will just have to accept digging through every couple of days to make sure nothing got sent there by mistake. The hassle factor is small compared to missing comments from real people.

Also, I wanted to mention that the “Contact” link at the top of the page is now working again. Something went haywire in the code for the old contact form. Don’t ask me why or how. This is a completely different vendor providing this form, and it has already been used with success.

So I hope that will help your comments get posted faster. Also, I hope the move to the new host, SpeedySparrow, is also making things load faster and without those annoying 500 errors I was getting from DreamHost.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you’re having a better experience. And thanks again for your patience through the rough spots.
