SC Breaks Heat Index Record

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina earned itself a dubious honor on Thursday: reaching the highest heat index recorded in the state during the 20 years records have been kept.

The heat index, a measure of what the temperature actually feels like when the real temperature and humidity are factored together, reached 124°.

I’m glad I wasn’t in Mount Pleasant. I wonder how people didn’t just explode into walking fireballs. Charleston, where the heat index was somewhere around 117°, was far too much for me.

By late Thursday, some powerful thunderstorms moved through, but it was still a few hours later that the muggyness finally gave way to slightly cooler temperatures. (And yes, I said, slightly.)

I’m ready for fall. Can we put a fork in summer, please? Anyone willing to second that motion?

  • I have to say that for once I’m not rushing into autumn – by and far my favourite season for some many (colourful) reasons – as this summer has been unique. Normally we get middle to high temperatures, which is fine, but we also get humidity to go along with those temps and then I just wilt. This summer? Only a week’s worth of days were in the 70 – 90% humidity range. That is wonderful! Today, for example, it is 85 F with only 37% humidity – it’s heaven. I love deserts with the 120 F and 2% humidity, too. But I’m nowhere near a desert here, and this feels perfect to me.

If/when the humidity returns, then I’ll be right there with you in wishing for autumn’s early arrival. But for now, I’m just really enjoying this! Please let New Jersey summers always be like this!

    •  @AislíngeKelloggdeGómez I once visited Chicago and heard a pair of native Chicagoans complaining about how humid it was. I got back to the hotel in time for the local news and saw that the humidity that day was about 40%. If they only knew what it’s like in SC, they’d never complain about their humidity again!

      • @patricksplace @AislíngeKelloggdeGómez Patrick, that is insane! I took a look at Chicago’s weather on http://www.noaa.gov (I site I highly recommend) and they have 103* and 70% humidity! What is wrong with them?!

I just know that I am looking forward to the thunderstorms predicted for Saturday night and Sunday morning. It is 08:33 now and 70*, humidity currently 78%, down from 94% at 06:33, exactly two hours ago. I don’t know how low it will get. Tomorrow is supposed to have a high of 99* (Yikes!), humidity unknown (or not posted). I’m dreading that. I won’t go out except for early in the morning to get some bagels! That is way too hot unless the humidity once again dips into the 30s.
