Rooney Hospitalized in Serious Condition

Posted by in CBS, Celebrities, TV

Former 60 Minutes essayist Andy Rooney was hospitalized earlier this week for “serious complications” that developed following “minor surgery.”

When I saw the mention of “minor surgery,” I chuckled. Even Rooney, if he was still doing his weekly commentaries, would scoff at anyone who claimed any kind of surgery performed on a 92-year-old patient could possibly be minor.

On October 2nd, Rooney delivered his final edition of “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” on the CBS newsmagazine. I thought he looked a little gaunt in his final segment, certainly less well than he looked in the interview segment with Morley Safer in the segment prior.

“I wish I could do this forever,” he said in that final regular broadcast. “I can’t, though.”

At the request of Rooney’s family, no details have been released on the “minor” surgery or on the type of complications for which he is now being treated.

I’ve seen several newspapers and websites posting what appear to be tributes to Rooney that one might expect as an obituary. It’s fairly common knowledge these days that most media outlets have obituaries already written for many notable people so that when they actually do pass away, the media outlet can provide ready content faster.

We can only hope that America’s favorite curmudgeon still has many years of grouchiness left to go.
