The sands will continue falling through the famous hourglass for another year. NBC announced today that it has renewed the only remaining soap opera on its schedule, Days of Our Lives, through September, 2014.
‘Days’ is the second-oldest soap left in network daytime television, behind ABC’s General Hospital, which premiered in 1963. With the famous words, “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives,” the Peacock network soap premiered in November of 1965.
It celebrates its 12,000th episode on Friday.
My grandmother watched the show when I was a kid, so I have some fond memories of the old Horton family, most of whom have either died off or been written off the canvas.
The number of soaps have dwindled dramatically over the past few years. Besides ‘Days’ and ‘GH,’ only CBS’s The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful remain on the air, though there is renewed talk that the internet may play host to new versions of ABC’s All My Children and One Life to Live.

I watched General Hospital during the Luke and Laura days. I arrived home from school in time to watch it. Once that story line became too overblown and silly (they were saving the world, if I recall) I stopped watching.
I no longer follow any daytime soaps nor do I want to.
My grandmother used to watch Days of our Lives and I remember the intro. I didn't recall anything else from the show, though.
