10 Offbeat July Holidays Worth Considering

For some of us, our next real holiday, once July 4th arrives, won’t come until Labor Day. But you may want to celebrate these lessor-known holidays in the meantime.

With apologies to our neighbor to the north for missing Canada Day on July 1st, I thought I’d spend a few moments on this Independence Day pointing out some far more obscure holidays July has to offer that you might consider celebrating (or fearing).

Most of them come from this website, so blame them if you don’t like what’s being celebrated.

Here are 10 interesting picks among the contenders for our time in July:

July 5th: Workaholics Day

Is being a workaholic a bad thing? I suppose that depends on the person doing the work and those in his or her life who’d like a little more time than they’re getting. But if you’re a workaholic — whether you want to be or not — this is your day. Conveniently, it falls on the day we return to work after a holiday. That’s what I call clever planning.

July 6th: National Fried Chicken Day

Here’s one I can seriously get behind! I love me some fried chicken. My diet is not particularly a fan, unfortunately, but if it’s a holiday, it’s a holiday. What choice do I have, right? (Just don’t tell my doctor.)

July 14th: National Nude Day

It may sound ridiculous, but the idea behind this day comes from various nudist colonies and enthusiasts who consider the body to be a beautiful work of art. I suppose that depends on who is nude. If you choose to celebrate this one, I strongly suggest you do so in the confines of your own home rather than out in public. There. You’ve been warned.

July 15th: National Cow Appreciation Day

Considering a popular advertising slogan, this might be the day to take the advice of those clever Chick-fil-A mascots and “eat mor chickin.” As much as I like a nice steak, I really do like cows. They’re sweet animals; if you’ve ever been to a petting zoo, you probably noticed the cows will come to you to be petted and will sometimes even lick your hand. It’s difficult to think about eating beef when you experience a sight like that. But vegetarianism is just not in my nature.

(3rd Sunday in July): National Ice Cream Day

What is up with diet assault this month? Well, if it’s a holiday, I suppose I need to comply. I think I’ll go for the Blue Bell Bunny Tracks.

July 22nd: National Hammock Day

Naturally, after filling up with so much food this month, you’ll need a nice place to take a nap. Don’t forget the sunscreen and mosquito repellant.

July 23rd: National Hot Dog Day

You didn’t think the eating was over, did you? I rarely have a hot dog unless I’m at a cookout. But in a rare moment, there’s nothing quite like a hot dog. I’m a purist: chili is fine, a little ketchup and mustard is fine. Sauerkraut, relish and various other toppings? I’ll pass, thanks. You can have mine.

July 27th: National Take Your Pants for a Walk Day

Finally, with all of the eating one must do to celebrate various holidays, there’s a day designed to get a little exercise into the mix. Hopefully, this won’t be the only day of the month that we go for a walk!

July 29th: National Lasagne Day

When I was a kid, there was a restaurant in town called Luigi’s Italian Kitchen. Luigi — that was his real name — came from Italy and cooked the richest, most incredible lasagne you’ve ever tasted with a deep, wine-infused sauce so dark it was almost garnet. I’ve yet to find a lasagne that comes anywhere close to it. I still miss that man and his little restaurant.

July 30th: National Cheesecake Day

Again, I’m a purist when it comes to my cheesecake. No white chocolate, no raspberry, no overpowering sauces or toppings. If you insist on drizzling something over the top, I’ll take a little caramel; that’s the only thing I’ve tried so far that doesn’t compete with the flavor too much. Boy, am I making myself hungry with this!

Are there any unusual holidays you’re planning on celebrating this month?

  • I know why I love reading your blog. You write about interesting topics and give it your personal twist! I really love this one. Thanks.

  • Wow. That’s a lot of food holidays this month!  Good thing we aren’t obligated to participate in them all!

    • Cathryn (aka Strange) I’m a little afraid to look ahead to August: if there were this many food-related holidays in July, August must be full of exercises. 🙁
