If there was a reminder this week that people need to read the actual story and not just a headline, this one might be a good one.

For the viewers who still have stuck in their craws anchor Ann Curry’s ousting from NBC’s Today show two years ago, news this week that Curry was leaving the network was seen as long overdue.

I’ve seen people praising Curry’s decision. These are people who clearly didn’t read the details.

If they had, they would have noticed some details that might have surprised them. It turns out, The New York Times says, Curry is leaving NBC News to create her own startup media company.

Okay, no problem there.

The startup will allow her to produce scripted and nonscripted “content of national and global importance,” a news release says.

Okay, still no problem.

Through the start-up, she will be able to report for (GASP!) NBC News and others.

Do what?

But wait, there’s more!

Who is initially funding the venture? Oh, yes…you guessed it: NBCUniversal, which, obviously, is the parent company of NBC News.

Fox News ran with the headline, “Ann Curry and NBC News call it quits.”

Despite going into similar detail about Curry’s “pact” with NBCUniversal and how it paves the way for Curry to report for the Peacock network’s platforms, Fox News, like most of the people who were praising Curry’s decision to “get out of there” seem to miss the obvious connection she will continue to have.

And Fox News even ran this snippet of a statement from NBCUniversal’s News Group Chairman:

“We’re proud to support Ann in her new venture, and we look forward to more of her exceptional storytelling.”

Sure doesn’t sound like they’ve “called it quits” to me.

I guess, at least for a while, that tell-all about what life at Today really was like that some have apparently been looking forward to getting their grubby hands on will have to wait a while longer.
