Next #Bloggab (7/16): Blog Critique Night III

Last Updated on January 6, 2019

#Bloggab is a weekly Twitter chat about personal blogging. Join us each Tuesday night at 9pmET. You can always find transcripts of past editions here.

Once a month, we hold a Critique Night with Bloggab: it’s an evening where we offer constructive criticism to two or three blogs over the course of the hour. Each blog gets about 15-20 minutes during which participants can offer helpful advice to the blogger.

As I’ve said before, the keywords, of course, are constructive criticism.

It takes a certain amount of bravery to put yourself out there and ask for such critiques. But a few who’ve already done so tell me that they found the information very helpful.

This week, we have three blogs to consider. So here’s the rundown:

9:05pm-9:23pm
SMM Insights
by @JasonHJH
Helping your brand win over customers on social media, before your competitors do.

9:22pm-9:41pm
I Am Clearing Preppy’s Name
by @preppylogic15
“Because Merriam Webster’s Definition of the Word puts us preps to shame.”

9:41-pm-9:58pm
Miss A’s Kindergarten
by @MissAsKinder
Written by a “Kindergarten teacher, blog designer, fun lover, teaching blogger, Christian lady enjoying every moment!”

That’s the schedule we’re planning. I encourage you to drop by the blogs before the chat and jot down a few initial impressions; that way, our volunteers will get the most out of their time with you because you’ll be able to jump right in with feedback!

And even if your blog isn’t among those being critiqued, it’s worth watching the suggestions because there’s a lot to be learned even if you’re lurking during such a chat: there are suggestions that might work for your blog, too.

I hope you’ll join us!

  • Patrick,
I think Constructive Criticism is an oxymoron. Criticism is negative no matter what adjective is put in front of it. FEEDBACK, on the other hand, is a better vehicle, especially when you establish ground rules which require the person giving FEEDBACK to respond with “I” messages, not “YOU” messages. YOU is accusatory and makes people defensive. So the word YOU is eliminated from all FEEDBACK, unless it’s positive, i.e, “You did a great job.” Using an I message requires close examination of what one finds at fault. “I can’t understand what [something] means.” “I don’t like hearing [whatever] repeated over and over.” Disguising a YOU message inside an I message is a no-no. “I think that YOU, etc., etc. is not FEEDBACK, it’s criticism. That’s why YOU is eliminated from FEEDBACK.  Meanwhile, have a good night — I’ve got to mow the lawn and can’t join you.
