This post is part of my ongoing series based upon the eBook 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. To read all of my other posts on the subject, check out the 31DBBB category. For more on the book itself, visit ProBlogger.

Should you be writing reviews on your blog? Today’s reading says they’re a great way to build an audience. So why am I not going along?

To put it simply, I don’t see a particularly easy way in which reviews fit that well into my blog’s format. Sure, I write about a variety of topics; I could do regular reviews of television shows I watch, or I could review books (if I had the time to read more), or any number of other things that I could find a way to stretch into a valid connection with my subject matter.

But frankly, I don’t care to write reviews. I want to write about the kind of subjects that interest me, and while it’s sometimes interesting to me to hear what other people think of a product or service, I don’t feel the need to go into detail about what I think unless my experience is so spectacular or so horrible that I’m fired up to write about it to begin with.

As a general rule, I’m not that fired up about everyday goods and services.

When I get bad service, then sure, I get fired up. When I get great service, since that’s almost what we’re conditioned not to expect, then I’m likely to write about that, too.

But in between, I just don’t feel that excited about the prospect of writing reviews.

On the other hand, there’s one review I am considering writing: a review of the text on which these blog challenges are based. If I do decide to do so, well, you’ll be the first to know.

Your Turn:
Do you ever write reviews of products or services on your blog? Do you feel that they get more hits than other kinds of posts you write?

  • No, not really. I may write a word or two about some product I am particularly happy or dissatisfied with, but my posts would not amount to any kind of actual “review.”
