The New Czar

Tag: Copyright, Politics, Writing & PublishingPatrick @ 10:13 am

Last Friday, President Bush appointed the nation’s first “Copyright Czar” to oversee America’s efforts to combat intellectual property theft. The Secretary of Commerce’s deputy chief of staff, Chris Israel, became the Coordinator of International Intellectual Property Enforcement, which Congress created last year to focus law enforcement agencies fighting copyright infringement. The position also oversees a federal umbrella agency responsible for administering intellectual property law, which is currently divided among the Library of Congress, the Justice and State Departments and the U.S. Trade Representative.

It’s not clear yet exactly what Israel will do to make copyright infringement less attractive to thieves, but it is an interesting step.
