I’ve been hearing a lot of news viewers lash out at the media about how much attention Tiger Woods received at the Masters.
Many of them have absolutely no interest in golf, and couldn’t name the past two or three Masters champions, I’d bet. Tiger Woods just happens to be an oh-so-easy excuse to lash out at the media in general.
Their typical complaint is that they’re tired of hearing the name Tiger Woods. Or that there were other golfers besides Woods at Augusta. Or that there were honorable …

The next time I hear a Republican lambaste a Democrat for wasting time on something unimportant, I’m going to refer to them to the story of a state representative from Greenville, South Carolina, who has taken it upon himself to make curling the Official Winter Olympic Sport of South Carolina.
Not just the “Official Olympic sport,” but the Official Winter Olympic sport, kindly paving the way for someone else to waste the state taxpayers’ money with recommendations for the Summer games.

Coming off of a gold medal win at the Winter Olympics, a Netherlands speedskater was less than pleased with a television reporter’s first question.
Olympian Sven Kramer was approached by an NBC affiliate reporter who wanted to get a quick interview. The reporter first asked Kramer to say his name, his country and the medal he’d just won.

The classic sitcom M*A*S*H has been bombed right out of the record books.
The 1983 finale of the show, which had held the record as the most-watched television program in television history, has been overshadowed by this weekend’s Super Bowl game.
Back in ‘83, just less than 106 million people tuned in to see Hawkeye, B.J., Hot Lips and the rest of the 4077th head home from the Korean War. On Sunday,

If you’re a sports fan, you already know about this. If you’re not, you will still get a laugh out of it.
I am not a sports fan. When I was a kid, I always tried to be the referee when I played with the other guys in my neighborhood, not because I knew all of the rules, but because it kept me from having to actively play sports.
So to say that I have limited knowledge of the inner workings of various sporting activities is something of an understatement.
Of all …

When the news first broke about a photo of Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps apparently using a bong at a party, and his quick statement of apology, the first thing that came to my mind was whether or not there might be any potential legal problem waiting for him.
Today, the sheriff of Richland County in South Carolina answered that question.
Sheriff Leon Lott says that if evidence can be established showing the Phelps smoked marijuana within the county limits, charges will be brought up:
“This case is no different than any other …

I’m not a big football fan. Just ask anyone who knows me. Or, on an average year, ask me in early January who’s even playing in the Super Bowl: I generally won’t know. This year, I actually knew who was playing, and I really enjoyed the game. Who’d have thought?!?
I spent the Super Bowl at church; I was the A/V guy, projecting the Super Bowl on the big screen for the 75-100 people who showed up to watch the game together, fellowship, and take part in a chili cookoff. It …

Or maybe it’s a load of something else.
Maybe I’m a bad alum. I’m not the kind of guy whose world comes to a halt when USC plays. (Yes, I mean USC, the University of South Carolina, not Southern Cal!) In fact, USC’s record on the football field has pretty much zapped a great deal of the little enthusiasm I ever had for sports to begin with.
I never go into it expecting them to win. That way, at best, I’m pleasantly surprised. At worst, I’m just not disappointed. Sounds lackluster, doesn’t …

Cat of This Much is True left the following comment to my post about the coach who was fired after his girls’ basketball team smoked its competition in a 100-0 blowout:
“In most leagues, there is a “slaughter rule” which sets a limit by which a team can be behind. Once that is reached, the game is automatically over. In Little Leagues, I believe it’s 10 runs; so if one team runs the score up to 12-2 in the second inning, the game ends. With relief, may I add!
“If that …

This is one of the dumbest stories I’ve seen in a while, and I’ve seen many.
A coach at a Dallas private school has been fired after comments he made about the way his girls’ basketball team played a recent game. That game ended with his team winning in a major blowout. The final score was 100-0.
A blowout, indeed.
School officials decided that they were embarrassed to win so big, and released an apology:
“It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. We humbly apologize.
“A victory without honor is a great …

“If you start to dwell on the wrong things, it’ll take you down fast. Every morning, I wake up and the first thing I think of is I’m thankful. I’m thankful for another day.” — Kay Yow
Kay Yow, NC State women’s basketball coach, has died after a decades-long battle with breast cancer. She was 66.
It’s time for a quick confession: not being a sports fan, I’m somewhat unfamiliar with Yow. The name sounded familiar when I saw it popping up in the status messages of some of my friends on …

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with a local school teacher who was participating in an interesting professional development program that allows educators to shadow people in different fields so that they can learn more about those fields and pass that knowledge along to their future students.
This teacher spent a good deal of the week at Channel 37, and one day was spent in my department learning about how we do promotion. We sat down and chatted before she got to sit with my producers and watch …
