Being middle of the road means freedom to criticize both sides without regret.

Sportsmanlike Conduct

The next time I hear a Republican lambaste a Democrat for wasting time on something unimportant, I’m going to refer to them to the story of a state representative from Greenville, South Carolina, who has taken it upon himself to make curling the Official Winter Olympic Sport of South Carolina.
Not just the “Official Olympic sport,” but the Official Winter Olympic …

Athlete to Reporter: ‘Are You Stupid?’

Coming off of a gold medal win at the Winter Olympics, a Netherlands speedskater was less than pleased with a television reporter’s first question.
Olympian Sven Kramer was approached by an NBC affiliate reporter who wanted to get a quick interview. The reporter first asked Kramer to say his name, his country and the medal he’d just won.

M*A*S*H Dethroned by ‘Super’ Numbers

The classic sitcom M*A*S*H has been bombed right out of the record books.
The 1983 finale of the show, which had held the record as the most-watched television program in television history, has been overshadowed by this weekend’s Super Bowl game.
Back in ‘83, just less than 106 million people tuned in to see Hawkeye, B.J., Hot Lips and the rest of …

Disorder On the Court

If you’re a sports fan, you already know about this. If you’re not, you will still get a laugh out of it.
I am not a sports fan. When I was a kid, I always tried to be the referee when I played with the other guys in my neighborhood, not because I knew all of the rules, but because …

Phelps’ Pot Problem

When the news first broke about a photo of Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps apparently using a bong at a party, and his quick statement of apology, the first thing that came to my mind was whether or not there might be any potential legal problem waiting for him.
Today, the sheriff of Richland County in South Carolina answered that question.
Sheriff …

Super Bowl Surprises

I’m not a big football fan. Just ask anyone who knows me. Or, on an average year, ask me in early January who’s even playing in the Super Bowl: I generally won’t know. This year, I actually knew who was playing, and I really enjoyed the game. Who’d have thought?!?
I spent the Super Bowl at church; I was the A/V …

Smells Like School Spirit

Or maybe it’s a load of something else.
Maybe I’m a bad alum. I’m not the kind of guy whose world comes to a halt when USC plays. (Yes, I mean USC, the University of South Carolina, not Southern Cal!) In fact, USC’s record on the football field has pretty much zapped a great deal of the little enthusiasm I ever …

The Slaughter Rule

Cat of This Much is True left the following comment to my post about the coach who was fired after his girls’ basketball team smoked its competition in a 100-0 blowout:
“In most leagues, there is a “slaughter rule” which sets a limit by which a team can be behind. Once that is reached, the game is automatically over. In Little …

Coach Fired…For Winning Big?

This is one of the dumbest stories I’ve seen in a while, and I’ve seen many.
A coach at a Dallas private school has been fired after comments he made about the way his girls’ basketball team played a recent game. That game ended with his team winning in a major blowout. The final score was 100-0.
A blowout, indeed.
School officials decided …

Remembering Kay

“If you start to dwell on the wrong things, it’ll take you down fast. Every morning, I wake up and the first thing I think of is I’m thankful. I’m thankful for another day.” — Kay Yow

Kay Yow, NC State women’s basketball coach, has died after a decades-long battle with breast cancer. She was 66.
It’s time for a quick confession: …

The Audacity of Complaints

Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting with a local school teacher who was participating in an interesting professional development program that allows educators to shadow people in different fields so that they can learn more about those fields and pass that knowledge along to their future students.
This teacher spent a good deal of the week at Channel 37, …

A Little Too Competitive?
April 10, 2008 – 8:20 pm | One Comment

This video clip is a perfect example of why I don’t get into competitive sports.
Anyone who gets into this much really, really needs to talk it out a bit. Without a racket in hand.
Just sayin’…

Dogs Bite Back on eBay
August 26, 2007 – 4:08 pm | One Comment

Now that Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has entered into a plea agreement in his dog fighting case, some of his collectible football cards are getting new attention on eBay. But for a very different reason.
A Missouri woman was so disgusted by Vick’s admission that she gave more than two dozen of his cards to her dogs and let them …

Hold On to Your (Toilet) Seats!

Ready for Royal Flush XL?
It’s the yearly event that happens with the Super Bowl: that halftime potty break where sports fans offload a little of the beer they’ve been drinking.
According to a recent article in the weekend section of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, approximately 90 million American toilets will be flushed during the halftime show. (Hopefully, none of those …
