Fireside Chats in the 21st Century

Last Updated on June 12, 2017

Franklin D. Roosevelt turned the radio into the ultimate communication tool for getting a message out to the American people.&nbsp  His calm, reassuring tone provided comfort to a nation suffering through the Great Depression.

But in the 21st century, radio just doesn’t cut it anymore.

So Barack Obama will become the first sitting President of the United States to appear on a late night talk show! Obama is scheduled to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC tonight to talk about his plan to rescue the economy.

Critics are blasting him for “dumbing down the presidency” — which is laughable considering our previous president — and “blurring the lines between the presidency and entertainment.”

Then on Sunday, he’s set to appear on 60 Minutes on CBS.

I don’t really mind a president appearing on a late night talk show.&nbsp  These days, there are probably plenty of people up late because they can’t sleep over worry about the bills they can’t pay.&nbsp  He’s liable to reach the very people who need a little reassuring.

It sure beats an informercial for the Snuggie.
