Day 3: The Simple Thing That’s So Hard to Do

How often do you talk to God? Ask that of the average Christian, and if they’re honest, the answer usually is, “Not often enough.”

Prayer is the easiest way to spend time with God, yet I find myself sometimes realizing how many missed opportunities there have been where I could have had a quick prayer but chose to be distracted by something else. And in almost every case, that “something else” wasn’t nearly as important.

No one seeks a friendship with someone in which the other person never speaks to you. Yet very often, that’s what we’re asking of God. We want His help in our lives, we want His protection in our endeavors. And we want Him to live up to the promises He has made about our future in which He prospers us.

And all we have to do is just say, “Oh, yeah. I believe.”

Sounds ridiculous, but that’s how non-believers — particularly of the outspoken atheist ilk — like to describe Christianity.

They don’t really believe that’s the case, of course, because if they did, they’d have no excuse for not jumping on the bandwagon, claiming to believe in a God they never have to bother to interact with or get to know, just so they could have their own chance at eternal life. It’d be like not picking up a lottery ticket you find on the street that could be a winner, and instead, just leaving it there: even if you didn’t want to invest your own money in a lottery, why not just pick up the found ticket…just in case?

But prayer does strengthen your relationship with God. And I really believe that prayer gets results. At the very least, it opens that critical dialog where He can speak directly.

The challenge is to overcome distractions that make it easy — too easy — to put it off. If it’s so easy to pray, why is it sometimes so hard to actually just stop and do it?
