This week’s Saturday Six takes you down memory lane to your school days. Hopefully, that’s not a scary thought for you.

By now, I figure it’s a safe bet that all students are officially back in class and summer vacation is but a memory. (Maybe I should have asked about summer vacations instead of school, but after nearly 500 editions of this weekly franchise, I’m sure I already have at some point. Probably more than once, too.)

Most of my memories of school are pleasant. I had good teachers, with only a handful of very rare exceptions. I went to good schools — all of them public schools, with the exception of kindergarten, which was church-run. What I hated most about school, no matter which grade, was what I’m sure most of us hated most: the subjects in which we had no interest or possessed no talent, the classmates who ridiculed us, and the various rules designed to force us to focus on learning rather than whatever little personal expression we were more interested in focusing on at a given moment.

But if you’re like me, I hope you have plenty of good memories. So let’s play!

1. What did you enjoy most about kindergarten?

2. What did you enjoy most about elementary school?

3. What did you enjoy most about junior high/middle school?

4. What did you enjoy most about high school?

5. Which grade or year of school was your least favorite and why?

6. What percentage of your classmates do you still have some real interaction with at least once per year?

Thanks for playing this week’s Saturday Six and I hope you’ll be back next week!

  • 1. What did you enjoy most about kindergarten?
Sitting in the office drawing and scribbling.
    2. What did you enjoy most about elementary school?
Not a lot. That it ended, I guess.
    3. What did you enjoy most about junior high/middle school?
I’m not sure how the grades translate, but I thought grades 4 to 6 were fun (small school). 7 and 8 not so much (big school, bullying). 9th grade was fun again, although the hormones, oh the hormones…
    4. What did you enjoy most about high school?
Again, not sure how these translate. In Finland we go to school for 9 years, then you can either go to a “lukio” for 3 years before applying to a university/polytechnic/etc, or you can go trade school, or just bum about. Lukio is mandatory if you want to go to uni. Is that high school? If so, it was a horrid time for me. I was bullied again and then sank into a depression that lasted years.
    5. Which grade or year of school was your least favorite and why?
I don’t know. Maybe grade 7, I was bullied a lot, the school was new, practically no friends at all…it was just bad.
    6. What percentage of your classmates do you still have some real interaction with at least once per year?
I talk to some of them on Facebook. Beyond that, I don’t have any.
