Conan O’Brien’s exit from Late Night with Conan O’Brien signals the start of a slow shift of late night hosts. But regardless of who is on when, which host — past or present — would be your all-time favorite?

In case you need a little help with the candidates, here’s someone else’s list of the best late night hosts.

  • First to play last week: Linda, author of Yes We Did: The Southern Argument for Progressive Change
  • (According to the rules, “First to Play” requires you to be the first to include the link to the specific entry in which you answered the questions, not just the general link to your blog.)

Here is this week’s “Sunday Seven” question. Either answer in a comment here, or put the answers in an entry on your blog…but either way, leave a link to your journal so that everyone else can visit! To be counted as “first to play,” you must be the first player to either answer the questions in a comment or to provide a complete link to the specific entry in your blog in which you answer the questions. A general link to your blog cannot count. Enjoy!

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
Name your seven favorite late-night talk show hosts.

Either answer the question in a comment or answer it in your journal and include the link in a comment. (To be considered “first to play,” a link must be to the specific entry in which you answered the question.) You may include this link in the URL space when leaving your comment, or in the comment itself. As long as it’s there in one spot or the other.

MY ANSWERS:
1. Johnny Carson
2. David Letterman
3. Dick Cavett
4. Steve Allen
5. Craig Ferguson
6. Arsenio Hall

  • Here’s the link to my list. Wow, I spent more time writing that than I’d planned on.

  • Why isn’t Colbert on that list?

Actually, Stephen Colbert isn’t my favourite. I think his schtick is a little bit over the top. He does seem to be able to keep pulling it off, though.

I think my list might look something like this:

    1)Johhny Carson
    2)John Stewart
    3)Dave Letterman
    4)Stephen Colbert
5)Bill Mahar (although I liked his old HBO show much better than his current one)
    6)Merv Griffin
    7)Jimmy Kimmel

I actually don’t watch any of the late night talk shows regularly at all these days. I used to watch Carson a lot when I was younger, but I stopped watching wehn Leno took over. I don’t find him entertaining at all. So I started watching Letterman. He’s a funny guy. Today, I think Stewart and Colbert are the most relevant talking heads on TV, so I’ll stop at them, if I happen to be watching TV and come across their shows. But there is no late night show I currently stay up on purpose to watch.

  • telling my age, Steve Allen is my all time favorite late nite host. I particularly liked his man on the street comments when ever a guest had stood him up.
