Trivial Ten #19

Here’s a collection of ten random links. I hope you enjoy what I came up with this week and let me know in the comments if you found any of your own!

1. Something’s In the Water: A Sumter, South Carolina, boy died from a rare brain infection that seems to be becoming somewhat less rare. The amoeba, Naegleria fowler, is often found in warm freshwater lakes or rivers, and infection is rare. But if you are infected, it is almost always fatal: the amoeba infects the brain and begins devouring it. That’s enough to keep me out of the water.

2. 10 Habits of a Highly Effective Blogger: I can’t say that I follow — or even agree — with all of these notions. Maybe that means I’m not as effective as I could be. Or, maybe it means that what’s effective in one list won’t be effective for all. How many of these do you do?

3. What Would the Gideons Think of This? A British hotel has replaced its Bibles with Kindles. Yes, the Bible is pre-loaded, and guests are allowed to add any other religious texts they want, up to about $8 in download fees. (They can also download secular texts, but those download fees are added to their bills.) Is it a good idea? Would you be more likely to look for a hotel room that offers Kindles, or would you bring your own, anyway?

4. Text Frenzy: The world sends a whopping 3.5 million text messages every minute. That’s just one interesting fact on a cell phone-related infographic that’s worth a look.

5. Slo-Mo Slicing: The Slo-Mo Guys are at it again, this time demonstrating that you can slice a watermelon in half with rubber bands! Don’t believe me? Have a look at their video for the proof!

6. Reader-Friendly Blogging: Is your site easy on your readers’ eyes? Here’s a list of seven ways to make your site more reader-friendly, but I might have added an eighth: avoiding obnoxious ads between the headline and post text. Just sayin’.

7. Please Check Yourself: If you haven’t checked your email address to verify whether its password was leaked, please do so. It’s as easy as entering your email address and clicking a button. It will immediately tell you whether your email account was included.

8. And the Winner Is…: A few weeks ago, I mentioned a design contest a friend of mine had entered that would create logo merchandise for the Obama campaign. Laurel finished as a national finalist and her design was selected as a winner! It’s now available on a t-shirt…if you’re inclined to purchase one. Congratulations, Laurel!

9. Coffee to Go: What says “luxury car” to you? Perhaps a car a built-in espresso maker? Not just a coffee maker, but espresso! The new Fiat 500L offers just such an amenity. Just what we need: another distraction in the car! (Hat tip to my friend Ted.)

10. Happy anniversary: Of all of the computers I’ve ever owned, there’s one in particular that just looks cooler than any other: the Apple G4 from 2002 that was shaped like a half-egg. That design is celebrating its href=”http://www.macworld.com/article/1167686/the_exceptional_imac_g4_ten_years_later.html” target=”_blank”>10th anniversary. Mine still works, though by today’s standards, it’s a little on the slow side. But I still think it’s cool!

Those are this week’s ten. Let me know if you’ve found any links worth a mention!
