Believe It or Not, Spring is Almost Here!

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so eager to see spring arrive. And that’s coming from someone living in a part of the country where winter was mild.

Thursday is the March equinox, which is a fancy way of saying that daytime and nighttime will both be nearly the same length of time: 12 hours each.

I suppose I need to clarify that to satisfy any astronomy enthusiasts in my audience: don’t plan on having exactly 12 hours of bright, sunny skies. That time also includes the start of sunrise through the end of sunset, so some of the time will include periods where it looks dark outside.

In any case, the March equinox marks the official start of spring.

As a general rule, I prefer cold weather to hot weather. Cooler weather means putting on a sweater or a jacket. But when it’s too hot, there’s only so much you can take off without causing a panic. Or sneers.

Charleston almost never gets snow, and although parts of the Lowcountry of South Carolina did see snow back in January and again in February, where I am, we got ice.

It was such a thick layer of ice, in fact, that I couldn’t get my car doors to open the next morning: they were literally frozen shut. That never happened when I lived in Richmond, and of the two cities, Richmond is infinitely more familiar with wintry weather than Charleston ever has been.

The Ravenel Bridge in Charleston closed a few times, causing numerous problems throughout the area. The bridge closed when there were fears that temperatures were low enough that freezing rain would create an ice hazard on the roadway. It was closed again when ice began melting from the distinctive infrastructure of the bridge and began breaking off, bombing cars below.

With the humidity, summertime in Charleston can get quite steamy. (And not in a good way.) So any season change that gets us another step closer to that weather isn’t necessarily something I look forward to.

But once in a while, even I get tired of wintertime.

And this year, in my book, it has worn out its welcome!

Your Turn:

How about you? Are you ready to be done with this year’s winter, or would you still like a few more weeks before you officially welcome spring?

  • I am loving the warmer weather. I only like winter during the Christmas season. Other than that, I think I need to move someplace warm year round. It was warm here last week. Now it’s cold again. It’s a bummer. I’m ready for consistently warm days!

  • HA! It is 19F here in CT and the highs today are supposed to be in the upper 30s. The normal high is in the lower 50s and the normal lows are in the upper 30s, and today we might not make it up to the normal low today.

It is great weather to grow potholes and we have one of the best crops in years. We probably grow them better than anywhere else in the country.
