There are certain types of snacks and foods — we call them comfort foods — that seem to make the world better no matter how bad a day you’ve had.
When you feel like you’re having a rotten day, are there certain foods that will snap you out of it? I definitely have some “comfort foods” and I thought I’d share my favorites. I’m curious to know which of these also make your bad day feel better!
If I had to pick a single favorite potato chip, Doritos, which are really tortilla chips, would be it. I’m a purist when it comes to food and flavors, so I prefer the original Nacho flavor to any of the spicy, ranch or other alternatives that have come out in the years since.
2. Microwave Popcorn
My first choice, when it comes to microwave popcorn, is the movie theater butter variety. I’m convinced there are endless buckets of this stuff in every movie theater in Heaven.
3. Ice Cream
If you’ve never tried Blue Bunny brand Bunny Tracks ice cream, you are seriously missing out!
4. Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich
I’m picky when it comes to this as well. I’ve convinced myself over the years to abandon white bread for whole wheat, and I can deal with a wheat-bread BP&J. But the peanut butter has to be creamy, not crunchy, and the jelly has to be grape jelly, not any other flavor and not jam.
5. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese
I can honestly say I’ve never cooked up a box of just this because I’ve had a bad day. But there have been times that I’ve made sure to make this a side item at dinner time. I don’t like any of the other brands of this stuff: it has to be Kraft.
6. Grilled Cheese Sandwich
I can do a whole-wheat grilled cheese sandwich, as long as there’s a little butter or margarine and some American cheese there.
7. Hot Fudge Sundae
Even McDonald’s simple little hot fudge sundae can do a world of good on a bad day. But if I’m on the right side of town, I know of an old-school drive-in style restaurant that makes sensational sundaes.
8. Peanut Butter Milkshake
Sonic’s peanut butter milkshake is a wonderful thing. I’m not often a milkshake kind of guy…but if peanut butter is involved, I’ll certainly reconsider that.
As for chain pizza restaurants, Pizza Hut is my go-to. When they run a sale on medium pizzas, I’ll order a Meat Lover’s and a Supreme and then I’ll have enough pizza to last me for a few days!
10. Cheese Grits and Sausage
Yeah, I know this is a weird one, but when I was a kid, my grandmother would make this for me for breakfast when I would stay with her on summer vacation weekdays while my folks worked. There’s something about that flavor, all these many years later, that takes me back to the whole “simpler times” thing.
