The month of July, in case you haven’t already heard, is Ice Cream Month, so I figure it’s our patriotic duty to celebrate it.
According to the website DaysoftheYear.com, which would know more about this kind of thing than I would, Ice Cream Month was established by the American Dairy Association, President Ronald Reagan and Kentucky Sen. Walter Dee Huddleston.
For the record, I don’t often buy this ice-cold treat very often. My weakness, more often than not, tends to be snacks that are saltier than sweet, so if there were ever a Doritos Month or Popcorn Month, I’d already be a regular celebrant.
However, in the spirit of the occasion, here’s a list of my 10 favorite treats that might feature in my “celebration” of the month.
1. Peanut Butter Milkshake
In my area, Sonic makes the best (and most reasonably priced) peanut butter milkshakes. I’m a big fan of peanut butter, and this flavor of milkshake is, by far, my favorite.
2. Bunny Tracks Ice Cream
Blue Bunny’s Bunny Tracks flavor features vanilla ice cream with swirls of caramel and fudge, chocolate-covered peanuts and little chocolate bunnies filled with peanut butter.
3. Hot Fudge Sundae
I like the vanilla ice cream (preferably soft serve) and the fudge. I also like the chopped nuts, but I’m not so much a fan of the syrupy walnut topping.
4. Vanilla Nut Roll Cone
One of my favorite restaurants back home is Zesto, and one of their specialties is the Vanilla Nut Roll. It’s a cone of vanilla soft serve, dipped in a chocolate sauce that hardens into a nice shell, and just before the cone comes out of the chocolate dip, it is rolled in chopped peanuts, which stick to the hardening shell.
5. Strawberry Ice Cream
Of the basic flavors, strawberry is my favorite. So if I’m going to have a bowl-full of a flavor other than the more complicated “Bunny Tracks” variety, this is probably my next choice.
6. Hot Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream
The Apple Pie has to be warm enough to make the ice cream start to melt.
7. Drumstick Ice Cream Cone
Nestlé’s Drumstick is the next-closest thing I can find to the famous Zesto Vanilla Nut Roll (See #4). Instead of Zesto’s crunchy cone, this one comes with a rolled waffle cone. It’s still quite satisfying.
8. Brown Mule
Also similar to Zesto’s Vanilla Nut Roll, the Brown Mule — it’s made by Pet but there are similar treats from other makers — is a slab of vanilla ice cream on a stick that has been dipped in the chocolate shell coating.
9. Ice Cream Sandwich
Soft chocolate wafers that envelope vanilla ice cream? It’s simple, but it works.
10. Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream
The last time Mom baked a peach cobbler, it just so happened that the film Gone with the Wind was being broadcast on one of the cable movie channels. My brain latched on to this combination: whenever I see peach cobbler, I have an urge to watch the famous movie; when I see a mention of the film, I crave peach cobbler.
None of these options are diet-friendly, of course, but you probably already knew that as soon as you saw the headline.
