Shocker! Playboy is Bringing Back Nudity

A year after Playboy magazine announced it would stop publishing nude pictures, it has reversed its decision, effective with the next edition.

Nude photography that made Playboy famous and was then dropped last year is returning.

That announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The only surprise I see is the fact that it took an entire year for the decision to remove nude photos to be reversed.

The magazine’s chief creative officer, Cooper Hefner, son of Playboy creator Hugh Hefner, made the announcement on Twitter Monday:

He acknowledged that the way in which nudity was depicted was “dated,” but didn’t supply any explanation of what he meant by that. He then called removing nudity altogether a “mistake,” adding, “Nudity was never the problem because nudity isn’t a problem.”

His Twitter feed also contains “edited” images of famous works of art from the likes of Picasso, Goya and Botticelli that have the female figures wearing white T-shirts to cover their nakedness. The tweets contain the hashtag, “#NakedIsNormal.”

The March/April 2017 issue, which will be on newsstands on Feb. 28th, will be the first in which nudity reappears.

Reviews for the non-nude Playboy weren’t necessarily glowing. Forbes called it “terrible:”

The March 2016 issue was the first no-nudes Playboy issue. Some sort of Snapchat girl was on the cover. Which should tell you something about the direction in which the publication is heading.

But despite the disappointment, sources reported magazine sales had increased since the removal of nudity. The Daily Mail reported a 30% increase in sales…at newsstands. However, subscriptions still dropped by more than 20%.

Will a return to the magazine’s roots get everything back on track? The answer to that question, unfortunately, requires a cliché, but the best response I can come up iwth is that only time will tell.
