Internet porn is about to get a new address…or at least, a new domain: .xxx will be the domain designed for adult content, according to a new report by CRIOnline.

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees net domains, decided that the new .xxx domain would allow explicit sites to move there to make it easier to filter and avoid them.

I suppose the reputable net porn producers and distributors will jump at the chance to have an .xxx site. I’m not expecting to see them let their .com, .net, or .biz sites go, however. Those who want to find porn can find it easily enough. Those who don’t want to see it or those who aren’t specifically looking for it often end up at such sites by accident, and that in itself can give certain cites enough hits to make advertisers think the sites are worth their ad revenue.

The .xxx domain idea is a good one if porn sites move there. It’s just inviting them to have that much bigger a presence if they don’t let their more commonplace domain registrations go.
