If you needed a reason to hate the reality show genre — and really, who needs a reason — there’s this item: the former producer of Cheaters says he’s pairing up two people some of us have gotten more than enough of: John Gosselin and Octomom Nadya Suleman.
The pilot of this show is to be called Jon – Kate = Jon + Octomom. This gives us a new reason to hate math as well.
The aforementioned producer talked about his idea to pair the two, describing it as something that could be “a very entertaining fiasco.”
If these two people, whose fifteen minutes of fame should have expired a long time ago, were to get married, they’d have a total of 22 kids.
Perhaps that’s the saddest reality of all.
There are many things wrong with “reality TV” but I guess in our celebrity-driven culture, we’re stuck with it because what could be better than having more celebrities? Even if they’ve never done anything noteworthy! (Sigh.)
But to me, one of the worst things about this format is what it’s doing to creative writing. There are fewer jobs for writers. We’re producing a generation of people who probably will have little (or no) idea how to create a scripted show, even if it’s not that great. That saddens me.
I always say I hate reality shows, but I do watch Super Nanny and Intervention. So I must not hate them so much after all.
