Sheen, Kutcher and Why I’m Pulling for the New ‘Men’

Within hours of confirmation from CBS, Warner Brothers and Ashton Kutcher himself that the star would be joining the cast of Two and a Half Men next season, Charlie Sheen predictably averted any temptation to keep mum on the subject.

“Kutcher is a sweetheart and a brilliant comedic performer,”&nbsp Sheen extolled, before adding, “Oh, wait, so am I!”

TMZ reports that Sheen claims the show will tank without him in the starring role he has had for the past eight seasons.

And you know, at this point, I’m hoping that the ninth season of the show earns the highest ratings of any of them.

Not because I’m a big Kutcher fan; honestly, I don’t have any positive or negative opinions of him at all.

But I’m just tired of this prolonged egomania from Sheen. And from his most vehement fans who bounce from insisting that no one can possibly take Sheen’s place because the character is Sheen’s real life persona to insisting that Sheen is a great actor. (Let’s face it: if he’s a great actor because the role he’s in is how he really is in person, then he’s not acting. Pick one or the other, not both.)

It’s a fairly reasonable assumption that Kutcher won’t be playing Charlie Harper, since Kutcher is 12 years younger than Sheen. Producer Chuck Lorre says he has a scenario that introduces Kutcher to the program that satisfies both the network and the studio; no one is saying, yet, what that scenario actually is.

But I hope the show works. I doubt that one particular star would ever really realize that he suddenly isn’t “winning,”&nbsp but at least the rest of us would be in on the joke.
