This is not something I do very often. But tonight, I feel the need to recommend someone else’s journal.
Completely by accident, I stumbled upon a journal called, Watching My Sister…Disappear. I’m very glad I did.
This is the story of Mary Louise Ross Harris, who is watching her beloved younger sister, Peggy, battle Alzheimer’s Disease. Mary Louise gives us an incredible look at what it’s like to have a family member who is dealing with this illness. Read just a few of the entries, and you’ll feel that you know her. Read a few more, and you’ll start to feel just a hint of the pain, sorrow, and anger she feels about what is happening to her sister as she is forced to watch helplessly.
Many people who write journals do so to release tension or deal with their feelings. I hope Mary Louise knows that there are those of us who read her words and keep her in our thoughts. I hope she finds comfort in the thought that one day, when her sister is over that rainbow, she will be able to look down and browse the entries with complete clarity…and she will be touched by what she finds there.
Thank you, Mary Louise, for this deeply personal story that you have decided to share with all of us. Your words touch me, and your dedication inspires me. How I wish that you could wake up and find out that this nightmare is only a dream.
Please visit her journal, and say a prayer for them. I did.
