Since switching to the current design for this blog, I’ve had to make one notable adjustment in the way I post new articles: I’ve had to add thumbnails.
If you’re reading this from the blog’s front page, you’ll see the thumbnail images next to almost all of the posts. If you’re reading this from the post’s actual single page, then you’ll notice that there’s a thumbnail in the Headline box next to that article just below the navbar.
The trouble is, I’m just anal enough that I feel this responsibility to go back and add thumbnails to past posts, and there’s a good reason for me to do so. That might not be such a daunting task but for the fact that this blog is coming up on its 6th anniversary and there are a total of more than 3,000 posts.
The good reason for me to add those retroactive thumbnails can be found at the bottom of the front page: there’s a dark gray strip featuring the latest video post and, to its right, a box marked “Random Posts.” The Random Posts box is designed to feature 12 previous articles. Trouble is, it features them by way of thumbnail only. When you mouse over one, the headline will appear as rollover text, and you can then click on the desired thumbnail to take you to that article. If the article has no thumbnail, unfortunately, it isn’t eliminated from consideration, so if the 12 “random” selections don’t all have thumbnails, you’ll only see thumbnails for the articles that do, meaning the box will only have a few.
I’ve added a lot of thumbnails so far. Since TV seems to be the number one tag here, I’ve tried to go in and make sure all of the TV-related articles have thumbnails. I’ve gone back in to several articles about religion and politics and added thumbnails there, too, although I’m not nearly finished with either of those categories.
I’ve added a few to the grammar and double standard categories, too. But they also need work.
My record, so far, is 7 thumbnails, which means that at the time, 5 of the stories the blog generated were sans thumbnails. Not bad considering that I’ve barely made a dent in the number of articles that actually do have them.
If you ever see more than 7, please let me know. A little encouragement might motivate me to get this done faster!
