Calm Down! Your Zodiac Sign Did Not Change!

If you got caught up in the furor about a sudden change in the zodiac signs, take a breather.

Whatever sign you thought you were the other day is the sign you still are.

An article in Minneapolis-St. Paul’s Star Tribune suggests that the real zodiac consists of 13, not twelve, signs, and adjusts the dates associated with most of them to fit the extra one in.

I’m a Sagittarius. At least, I am in the “traditional” zodiac. In this “new” version, I’m a Scorpio.

My dad is a Scorpio the old way, and a Libra in the rearranged setup. My mom is also a Sagittarius, unless you go by the new way, in which she’s now something called an Ophiuchus. Good luck getting her to go along with that!

It’s not really the end of the world, but as CNN points out, people who have zodiac-related tattoos are in a panic about needing to change the symbol already inked into their skin.

The fact is there have always been two versions of the zodiac. The tropical zodiac is the one Western astrology uses. That’s us, kids.

The sidereal zodiac — this supposedly new-fangled version that has actually been around for centuries — is the one eastern astrology uses.

Like an urban legend, this story apparently keeps popping up in cycles as if it’s some brand new discovery. Even though it isn’t.

So let the panic leave your mind: there are definitely more important things to worry about. You are what you always have thought you were.

There. Feel better already, don’t you?

  • I am a long-time fan of the Japanese RPG series Final Fantasy. One of the titles in the series featured a quest involving the Zodiac, but it had thirteen of them – Ophiuchus being the last one. I was fascinated by the appearance of a thirteenth sign and wondered about its origin. Now I finally know. Patrick's Place – it entertains and it educates!
