Sunday Seven – Episode 249

From the first time I saw the PT Cruiser, I liked the looks of it. But when it comes to classic cars, I really like those old 1940s rounded designs.

Not that there’s anything wrong with the fins of the 1950s, mind you, but I just like that earlier look.

But a new article puts the PT Cruiser in a list of the 50 Ugliest Cars of the Past 50 Years!

There are definitely some deserving nominees on this list: the Pacer, the CitiCar, or the Brat, for example. But there are definitely cars on that list that I wouldn’t be ashamed of owning.

Could you come up with seven you wouldn’t be ashamed to drive?

    I've driven a lot of Volvos… a 240 both TD and gas w/ and w/o turbo, a 245, a 260/264, a 940, a 960, an 850, a 360, a 460, a 760 both gas and TD, and S90 (re-do of 960). It has been a long time since I drove a Volvo. I'd love to have one again…

As for the boxy look of the 240 series – it may not look like the most streamlined thing in the galaxy, but it was extremely safe to drive. I've seen a lot of 200 series Volvos (and later models too) that went head-on with a moose or something heavier. In many cases the engine was obliterated, but the cabin was intact, which is rare with your standard issue Japanese rice cup.

  • There are many cars on this list that I wouldn't mind owning. In fact, I'm wondering what the (1) DeLorean, (2) Plymouth Prowler, (3) VW New Beetle, (4) PT Cruiser, (5) BMW 7 Series, (6) Ferrari Enzo, and (7) Chevy SSR are even doing on a list of ugliest cars. I like them all!

I also wouldn't mind having a VW Thing, a Toyota Van or a Chevy El Camino (but definitely not the model pictured in the slideshow).

If I had more money than I knew how to spend and had a car collection, I would want a Bond Bug, Bricklin SV1, CitiCar, Nissan S Cargo (escargot?), Fiat Multipla, Corbin Sparrow and maybe a few others as well just for the sheer novelty.

I think AMC had the ugliest cars of all-time. The slideshow had two offerings from AMC, the Gremlin and the Pacer, but left out the ugliest of the ugly cars, the Matador.

    • I like the Prowler a lot, too. It reminds me of the Batmobile, but in a good way. I saw one not long ago that was a deep purple, which I think was one of the standard colors, and it was really a nice looking car. I had a relative who owned a Pacer, and I never could figure out why.
