Don’t Even Think About Going ‘All Lower’ on Me

No, you aren’t E.E. Cummings, and even he doesn’t get his lowercase convention all the time.

Today, as I pointed out in an earlier List of the Week, is National Lower Case Day. Good for them. If you’re a celebrant, I hope you enjoy yourself.

Really.

I’m afraid, however, that I won’t be joining in with much enthusiasm on this particular party. We have more than enough excuses these days to skewer the English language at every turn. Text messages and email shorthand have nearly made grammar keel over in shock.

The least we can do, especially if we wish to be understood, is to capitalize correctly.

And just in case you were wondering, if there’s ever a National Upper Case Day, I won’t be writing posts THAT LOOK LIKE THIS, either.

So there.

  • What a ridiculous notion! It’s bad enough that people don’t bother to capitalize when they text – or to spell out words, even!  No, I won’t be joining in, either!
