Pondering A Writing Contest

I’m considering entering a short story into a fiction contest I read about in a local weekly newspaper. I certainly have no delusion that it has a chance of winning anything, but I like the idea of holding myself to a firm deadline.

As I was reading over the draft and getting ready to rewrite it, I had a bit of a flash of a better beginning, so I sat down with the trusty laptop and started writing the new beginning. I’ve gotten 407 pages words (thanks, Wil!) tonight, which isn’t anything major, but still it is a start. And I feel good about where it’s headed.

I’d like have it finished by the weekend, but I have some other projects I’ll have to attend to that will demand a good deal of my time. Still, I have until September 5th to determine whether I’ll make deadline or not, so I’ll keep plugging along.

We’ll see. Wish me luck.

  • Good luck! I’ve been using the deadline submission dates of several local publications as motivation for finishing some creative nonfiction I started months ago but never finished. It helps to have external deadlines, doesn’t it!
