10 Great Quotes About Getting Older

As I contemplate another birthday in a few days — and one more step towards the big 5-0, I compiled this list of quotes about getting older.

As the old joke goes, most people don’t like the idea of getting older, although it does beat the alternative.

Next year, I’ll hit that birthday that’s generally celebrated with decorations in black as if it’s a funeral rather than a birthday. So to try to get my mind off being one year closer to the half-century mark, I put together this list of quotes.

“[40 is] where life begins. Everything up until that moment…is a tryout.”

Harry Belafonte

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.”

George Bernard Shaw

“With aging, you earn the right to be loyal to yourself.”

Frances McDormand

“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

“And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count; it’s the life in your years. ”

Abraham Lincoln

“You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.”

Gen. Douglas MacArthur

“A birthday is just another day where you go to work and people give you love. Age is just a state of mind, and you are as old as you think you are. You have to count your blessings and be happy.”

Abhishek Bachchan

“In youth we learn; in age we understand.”

Marie von Ebner Eschenbach

“For all the advances in medicine, there is still no cure for the common birthday.”

John Glenn

“Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

Jack Benny, Satchel Paige, Mark Twain or possibly someone else.
