It was a birthday celebration on Friday for my two friends. Zack, my cocker spaniel, is 2. Zoey, a golden retriever mix that I adopted from a shelter last summer, is 4. Of course, since she was adopted, I have no idea when her birthday really is, but for the sake of convenience, I celebrate both birthdays on the same date.
She didn’t seem to mind.
Like any animal lover who believes dogs are meant to be spoiled, I naturally marked the occasion with special treats: I bought them a box of mini-cupcakes and over the course of a couple of days, they had their doses of “birthday cake” to celebrate the occasion.
Neither of them seemed to mind this departure from their normal dog food.
When they saw that the box was empty, I think they started longing for their next birthday! Then they found out that I also had rawhide chews, and they forgot about the lack of cupcakes.
Some dogs have rough lives. If I believed in reincarnation, I’d want to come back as a dog that belongs to someone like me.
Of course, Mark Goodson, the venerable game show producer, once joked that he’d like to come back as one of Bob Barker’s dogs, until Barker pointed out that he ends each episode of “The Price is Right” with a spay/neuter plug. Maybe coming back as a dog isn’t the best idea, after all.
