Couple Dies 60 Minutes Apart After 72-Year Marriage
They lived more than seven decades of their lives side by side. And they died the same way.
Some stories are just so incredible and speak to such a strong power of love between two people that they are just meant to be shared. This is one of them.
An Iowa couple married since 1939 — that’s 72 years, folks! — died an hour apart following a terrible car accident.
Gordon and Norma Yeager were rushed to a hospital after police say he pulled out in front of an oncoming car that wasn’t able to stop in time.
Nurses set them up side by side in the intensive care unit, where Gordon, 94, and Norma, 90, held hands until the end. He died first, with family surrounding them both.
But though he stopped breathing, reports KCCI-TV , his heart monitor was still registering a heartbeat.
“The nurse checked and said that’s because they were holding hands and it’s going through them. Her heart was beating through him and picking it up,” their son, Dennis, says.
Exactly one hour later, down to the minute, Norma passed away, too.
Their family says it was a blessing: they couldn’t imagine how they’d be able to tell either one of them that the other was gone, or how either would have been able to live without the other at his or her side.
And here’s a footnote to this story: at their funeral earlier this week, they held hands in their casket. They will be cremated, after which their ashes will be mixed together.
If we’re lucky, we’ll all find that kind of love in our lives. And if we’re lucky, we’ll all have that special person we’ll take that final journey with together for all time.
