My 10 Favorite Cake Flavors
Since it’s National Cake Day, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to work up a list of my 10 favorite cake flavors.
Of my 10 favorite cake flavors, my mom’s recipe easily takes the top slot.
1. Mom’s Lemon Pound Cake
All of mom’s pound cakes are far more moist than most pound cakes I’ve sampled. But her lemon pound cake is my favorite, with or without icing.
2. Carrot Cake
I never wanted to try this when I was a kid because the name was so unappetizing. Finally, my mom got me past the name by betting me $5 that I’d love the taste of it. She kept her $5!
3. Yellow Cake
It’s a basic staple among cake flavors, but I’ve always liked the regular yellow cake. I don’t mind a little chocolate icing on it, either.
4. Red Velvet Cake
If it’s moist enough, Red Velvet Cake is high on my list.
5. Apple Cinnamon Cake
It’s sort of like the flavors of a spice cake crossed with apple cobbler.
6. Birthday Cake
Birthday cake is a bit different than traditional yellow cake and that unique birthday cake icing adds an extra level of sweetness.
7. Strawberry Cake
As opposed to Strawberry Shortcake, this is a strawberry-flavored cake rather than angel food cake with strawberries. Topped with strawberry icing, it’s a nice alternative.
8. Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
I love pineapple and this cake combines the sweetness and occasional tartness of the pineapples.
9. The Ultimate Coconut Cake
I’m not a huge fan of coconut, but this particular creation, a 12-layer cake by The Peninsula Grille in Charleston is a major exception!
10. Chocolate Layer Cake
I’m not a huge fan of chocolate cake because too often, it’s too much chocolate. Most recipes I see these days aren’t just chocolate, they’re something along the lines of “Chocolate Lovers’ Super-Overload.” But if it’s a more traditional chocolate cake, I’m in.
