Pantone 2021 Colors of the Year Seem About Right

We learned this week there will be two Pantone 2021 Colors of the Year. One of the colors seems like it’d be a nice fit for 2020.

Every year, Pantone releases its prediction of a color that will be essential in design for the year ahead. But this time around, we have two Pantone 2021 Colors of the year.

This year marks only the second time the company chose a pair of colors. The last time it happened, back in 2016, the company chose pale pink and blue hues. Last year, the company chose a nice blue for 2020.

Well, 2020 certainly made a lot of us feel blue, among other things. But as 2020 comes to a close, the color some of us might be left feeling is more gray than anything else.

Guess what?

Ultimate Gray is one of the two colors of 2021. The other color is called Illuminating; it’s a bright shade of yellow, if the name seemed a bit vague.

“A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting,” Pantone’s website states.

You can see the two colors here:

Or as their Twitter account puts it, “a fresh sunrise meets rocky terrain.” After 2020’s rocky terrain, I suspect most of us are ready for sunshine!

  1. I love the Pantone colours and even have theoriginal Pantone Colour Guide, from when I temped there in Moonachie, New Jersey in the early 1990s. It is kept in a drawer of my home office where the sun can’t touch it and change the colours in it. It had a $500 value in that time, but they’d known that I was an artist and even though I had temped there only a month or so, they were wonderful to give me one. To this day, I still use it, frequently.

And you know, as an artist, I have Pantone pencils, as well as Fabre-Castellated, brands I love and delight in. Thank you for this article! I love what these companies for my art. I can use their products, but I couldn’t make them. They each have a huge role in my daily life.

    As do you.
