The Most Ridiculous Letter Ever

I was reading the newspaper and I glanced at today’s Dear Abby column. If this isn’t the most ridiculous letter I’ve ever read in that column, it has to be among the top three:

I have reason to believe that a young man in my family may be gay. (He is 15.) I have been thinking a lot about it lately, and have been wondering if circumcision would cure it. What do you think?

Circumcision? As a “cure” for homosexuality? I nearly spilled my coffee!

Abby immediately corrects the writer’s warped ideas: homosexuality is not an illness, and therefore isn’t something that can be cured. To address the odd theory, she points out that since circumcision is a sacred rite of the Jewish faith and that there are prominent Jewish homosexuals, the theory is automatically shot down. But rather than sending her writer back to the drawing board, Abby suggests that the family accept their relative as he is, and offer support and love rather than trying to come up with ways to change him. “And stop trying to come up with crackpot ideas like this,” she did not add.

But when you think about it, the idea that people are this misinformed and ignorant about homosexuality perhaps explains a lot about why, with all of the world’s problems, anyone can put as their number one priority an amendment to keep homosexuals from having the right to marry!

  • Patrick, I think I would have spit out my coffee if I had read that. I’m glad, however, that Abby had the response that she did!
