The War of Chicken Sandwiches Forced to Take a Pause

A social media war over chicken sandwiches may have come to a temporary end because Popeye’s seems to be out of ammunition.

Popeye’s, which declared war on Chick-Fil-A over who sells the best chicken sandwiches has run out. Nationwide, the restaurant’s locations are either already out or about to be.

You can’t make this stuff up!

Popeye’s made the announcement on Twitter earlier this week: for now, their new $3.99 is completely sold out.

Don’t beat yourself up if you’d somehow missed Popeye’s chicken sandwich. They only launched it on Aug. 12, about two weeks ago.

The initial supply sent to its restaurants was supposed to last through September. By then, presumably, they’d continue supplying their locations and no one would have missed a beat.

Somehow, through a social media war that went crazy, far more people than anyone imagined ventured to see what their fuss was all about.

So who won the chicken sandwiches war?

On the one hand, you could say Popeye’s was the victor. After all, what was supposed to last six weeks barely lasted a third of that time.

But the other side of the coin is that Chick-Fil-A, whose primary menu item is the chicken sandwich, is still selling them like hotcakes. And all the while, people find signs with messages like “No Sandwiches” at their competitor.

I suppose it’s not unreasonable to wonder if, at least for now, it might be a draw.

I have sampled plenty of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in my day. At the moment, the Chick-Fil-A that’s less than a mile from my house is being remodeled. Actually, it was completely torn down and is being rebuilt. The new building looks about the size of an airport hangar by comparison!

But it won’t reopen until November. The next closest location is a couple of miles further, but the lines there are now extra long because of the other store’s temporary closure.

Needless to say, I haven’t had much Chick-Fil-A in the past couple of months.

As for Popeye’s, there’s no convenient location near me. I haven’t tried Popeye’s chicken in probably 20 years.

Maybe I will make an effort to go find a store in a neighboring community when the sandwich comes back.

But honestly, I doubt I’ll bother. Chick-Fil-A has a spicy variety of their famous sandwich, so I feel like I can have one of each from the same place and accomplish the same thing.

How about you?

Have you tried both Popeye’s and Chick-Fil-A’s chicken sandwiches? Which did you like better?
