The BlueSky logo is now a butterfly instead of…whatever the old logo was. It just began rolling out last week.
Posters using an emoji inspired the new BlueSky logo, the social media platform says. It began rolling out that new branding, a butterfly over a blue field, days before Christmas.
In a Dec. 21 blog post, Jay Graber wrote the butterfly, symbolizes “change and transformation.”
Early on, we noticed that people were organically using the butterfly emoji ? to indicate their Bluesky handles. We loved it, and adopted it as it spread. The butterfly speaks to our mission of transforming social media into something new.
The website MindBodyGreen states the butterfly represents everything from transformation to rebirth, hope, and bravery.
“Seeing one is a sign that positive change is transpiring, and brave forces are watching over you and ensuring graceful transitions,” Animal Medicine author Erika Buenaflor writes. “The butterfly encourages you to flow through your transformation with confidence.”
Since 2000, MSN has used a butterfly in its logo.
I did chuckle when I saw that someone asked why the logo looked like an X, apparently trying to suggest it was somehow related to the former Twitter. The responses, I’m sure you can imagine, were equally funny. My favorite was, “Have you never seen a butterfly?”
Prior to the announcement, BlueSky’s logo was a collection of cube shapes. I’m not exactly sure what it was, actually. But some of the shapes appeared to be connected with lines, which I’m assuming was meant to imply a computer network of sorts.
The butterfly — even if it reminds you of an X — is still a drastic improvement over those cubes.
