Actor Anthony Geary is leaving one of the most well-known roles in soap history when he exits ‘General Hospital’ late this month.
Remember “Luke and Laura?”
The wedding of Luke and Laura Spencer on General Hospital back in 1981 was viewed by an estimated 30 million people. (That still ranks it as the most-watched episode in daytime history.)
Genie Francis portrayed Laura on the ABC soap (but left in 2013), and Geary, who plans to leave the show on July 27th, played Luke.
On July 27th, Geary will appear, apparently for the final time in the role he made famous for about 37 years.
For longtime fans of the show, it will be a reunion of Luke and Laura as well: Francis is returning as well and in the storyline, the pair must work together to rescue their son, who they believe has been kidnapped.
That’s a pretty good run for an actor >a href=”http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/86522/general-hospital-actor-geary-to-end-role-on-july-27″ target=”_blank”>who told the Associated Press that he signed on for a 13-week run in 1978.
Geary already taped his final scene on the series, and admitted choking up when he saw present and former cast members who gathered for a sendoff.
He told Entertainment Weekly he’s looking forward to raising the curtain on his life’s “Act 3.”
General Hospital, which premiered in 1963, is currently the longest-running soap and the only soap left on ABC.
I saw the Luke and Laura wedding but I’m a Bo and Hope fan from Days of Our Lives.
I watched General Hospital during the Luke and Laura era – before it got just too crazy for me. (Trying to save the world? Really?) That’s the only daytime soap I ever watched.
My grandmother would watch “her stories” all afternoon. She was housebound much of the time and it gave her something to do.
