End of ‘World’ Goes By Quietly

For soap fans who are interested in keeping score, the final week of CBS’s long-ailing soap As The World Turns didn’t show any major improvement in key demographics.

Which is a sad testament to what had become television’s oldest soap following the cancelation of Guiding Light the year before.

The show picked up 18,000 people in its final week compared with the week before, which translates into an additional 105,000 compared to the same week one year ago, according to TV By The Numbers.

Ironically, though, for the Women 18-49 demo, a key demo for advertisers, the show’s final week saw 10,000 less people watching than the week before.

Longtime fans of the show, and the genre in general, would likely never agree that such a statistic could be good evidence that the show’s time had come; unfortunately for TV viewers of shows that aren’t getting the ratings advertisers want to see, numbers don’t lie.
