‘In Search Of’ Getting Reboot on HISTORY
The classic series ‘In Search Of’ is the television program slated for a reboot and there’s an interesting coincidence surrounding the host.
There are three things I remember from my childhood about the classic science fiction/mystery series In Search Of: host Leonard Nimoy, the eerie electronic music and how much it scared the crap out of me at times.
Nimoy, of course, played Vulcan science officer Mr. Spock on the U.S.S. Enterprise on Star Trek. By the time I saw him in this role, I’d certainly see episodes of Star Trek. So seeing him host In Search Of was the first time I’d ever seen the actor without Spock’s trademark pointed ears.
In Search Of featured Moog synthesizer music at its finest. Here’s a listen at the opening and closing themes used while it was on the air from 1977 to 1982:
The program told the stories of classic mysteries. The program featured everything from extra-terrestrials to ghosts to witches and monsters. There are a handful of episodes I remember distinctly. I recall an episode about Amelia Earhardt, the female aviator who vanished without a trace. I also remember an episode about Bigfoot.
And I remember a specific scene from an episode about ghosts about a drunken squire whose horse waded into a river. He fell off the horse and into the shallow river and drowned. A short time later, the squire’s groom went searching for him and his horse took him to the river bank. The groom saw the ghostly figure of the dead squire rising from the river and collapsed. When the groom was found, he managed to tell what he’d seen…and then died himself.
I was probably about 9 or 10 when I saw that show. Obviously, it still sticks with me all these years later.
The host of the reboot, interestingly enough, shares a unique connection with Nimoy. Actor Zachary Quinto has been named the new host. Quinto has played Nimoy’s role of Mr. Spock in the Star Trek movie reboots.
What are the odds that two actors would host the same show 40 years apart after playing the same character in the same science fiction reboot about 40 years after the original went off the air?
It’s worth noting that the original host of In Search Of was none other than Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling. Serling appeared in three made-for-TV movies before his death in 1975. But the popularity of the films led to the creation of the series, and Nimoy was then hired as its host.
The new series will air on HISTORY, formerly known as the History Channel. The program premieres on July 20 at 10:00pm.
Here’s a preview:
It appears Quinto will be far more “hands-on” than Nimoy was.
I think I’ll have to check this particular reboot out. How about you?
